I don't even like chocolate ice cream, but I thought it would be a good indication of the tastiness of the creamy confection sold by Taharka Brothers. Formerly Sylvan Beach Ice Cream, Taharka Bros. now operates a cart at the corner of Redwood and Greene Streets, near the University of Maryland School of Social Work and directly across from the main entrance of University of Maryland Hospital.
Taharka offers small ($3) and large ($4) size cups, generously filled with any of about 6 flavors. Today they had chocolate brownie, key lime pie, butter pecan, honey graham, strawberry, vanilla, and maybe another flavor that I can't remember off the top of my head. I sampled a coworker's key lime yesterday (lightly lime-y, with fluffy parts that may have been meringue, and graham cracker crumbs) and it was quite yummy. As was the chocolate. I can't really put a finger on why I dislike chocolate ice cream, apart from the homemade stuff my friend Karen makes. Taharka Bros. version was almost as good as hers, and that's saying something. The flavor reminded me a little of the chocolate on the outside of the Eskimo pies of my youth (they don't taste the same to me now).
It's busy on that corner in the summer, and they're stationed across from a hot dog vendor, so they should do pretty good business. If you're in the area, stop by for a cup.
